Apple TV + Boxee = My new god

picture-1If you follow me on Twitter, Facebook or know me in real life, you’ve probably heard me ranting about my new Apple TV box. I bought it just before Christmas and have been using it along with my wonderful Christmas gift from my parents – a 32″ Toshiba (1080i) LCD HDTV.

Can I just say, that it has basically completely changed the way that I watch tv – and the best part is that it has so much incredible potential to be so much more – This little box paired with the Boxee software creates this incredible social media, music media playing, podcast playing, streaming internet video playing, downloading, wonderfully…… and so on.

I think the best part about it is that it automatically indexes and finds media that is stored on your networked drives. So in my case, i’ve got a pretty basic network consisting of a modem, a wireless N router, and a NAS drive. I keep all of my media on the NAS drive (that could be RAIDed for security), and boxee knows to keep an eye on the files that are on the NAS drive – so whenever I upload a new file to the NAS (usually through finder), Boxee often automatically finds it, and makes it best guess as to what the movie, or tv show is called (sometimes its wrong, but its super easy to change the name, and give it the right data – it IS getting much better at identifying content though).

I highly suggest that if you haven’t already tried the alpha, that you give it a whirl. It runs on Windows, OSX, Linux and Apple TV and is relatively easy to install, and if you get into a bind, they’ve got a really great development team, and also a very active forum – someone is always available to help.

Check it out at boxee.tv

Apple Event Today!

Having recently joined the iPhone 3G community, I feel like I should share what my hopes, dreams, wants, needs are for today’s apple event. Mostly cuz i’m just a huge geek, and actually care about this shit (yeah, i’m crazy).

  1. Better battery life (iPhone 3g battery life SUCKS)
  2. Better Mail app
  3. Copy/Paste function
  4. Zoom on camera (using pinch)
  5. More customizable springboard
  6. Ability to delete default icons off the springboard
  7. Turn by Turn navigation using Google maps
  8. Walking directions using Google maps (currently available on their live site)

I know i’m a fan boy… Plz dont torment me!

Why this apple fanboy (me) – will wait to get a 3G iPhone

Well, the big announcement we all (at least I did) expected happened yesterday afternoon at the WWDC Conference. iPhone 3G, slimmer, GPS, Better Audio, etc etc etc.

Its great that the phone will finally be coming to Canada, at such a great a great price, however… The phone is still lacking some key features I was looking for, specifically: a better camera, and 32gb storage.

I’ve currently got an 8gb iPhone with a cracked screen, and although the glass is ugly, it works great, and can get by for now with only 8gb storage. So, for this reason, i’m going to be waiting on this “1st generation 3G iPhone”. Its going to be worth it, as i’ve seen it in the past (many times), Apple updates products shortly after they’re released, with a new revision… So, heres hoping we’ll be seeing a 32gb version very soon after the initial launch of the phone!!

Complimentary iPhone Post

We all know its coming, the 2nd Gen iPhone will be released this week, and I want nothing more than to get it. My experiences with my 1st gen iphone in Canada has been nothing more than awesome. Its really a great phone, and although it may not be for EVERYONE – I think it does fill a certain market – that is, people who dont need/want a blackberry, and for people who love to carry their ipods around with them.

I’m certainly one of those people, If I didn’t have my iPhone right now, i’d be forced to carry around a phone + an ipod. This wouldn’t be the most horrible thing in the world, but, its just so much more convenient to have them both in one. Thats not even counting the functionality from the browser, email, contacts, games, MSN, Twitter, text messaging, photos. etc etc.

This is my iPhone 2.0 wishlist/speculation list

  1. BRING THE IPHONE TO CANADA WITH A DATA PLAN (rogers/fido)
  2. Better camera (3-4mp would be amazing)
  3. Video Recording
  4. GPS
  5. 802.11n wireless (only because I recently upgraded my router, and have found 802.11n so much better)
  6. 32gb or more Capacity (this would fit almost my entire music library)

Thats about it, pretty easy, and nothing really out of the realm of possibility. Either way, i’m going to be buying this phone, and will hopefully be able to enjoy some of its new features here in Canada.
