Winter 2011 Pedalboard Update

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Pedalboard Winter 2011Lots of changes on my pedalboard the last few months. Actually, not many major changes, but i’ve switched up from a Pedaltrain Mini to a Junior board. This made sense for me, as I occasionally want to try other pedals out (i’m always looking at the local Craigslist for good deals), and the larger board made sense to me, since I’m not really carrying my gear around any more.

My board, since joining the Reason has been very minimal. Minimal tones are required, nothing much more than overdrive and delay. I’ve thought about adding some kind of modulation (Phaser/Rotating speaker) a few times, but I haven’t jumped at anything yet, I haven’t seen a need for it really.

This week I added the Mad Professor Little Green Wonder pedal (LGWD). Its a much higher gain pedal than my Sweet Honey Overdrive (which is my favorite pedal of all time). I can’t say that i’ve instantaneously fallen in love with the Little Green Wonder, but I can say that i’m going to give it a chance on the board before swapping it out for something (possibly another Sweet Honey – What can I say, now that i’ve found what I like as far as overdrive, I can’t get enough).

Xotic Ep-Booster (nerdy guitar content inside)

I’m in Ottawa this weekend for my cousin Emily’s wedding. Luckily I had a bit of time to head over to the local music shop (which i’ve heard a lot about recently) called Lauzon Music. They had a relatively decent assortment of higher end Gibson’s, Fenders, various acoustic guitars, and a room in the back that had a bunch of Dr Z amps – which was really nice to see. I love me some DrZ! I had a Z28 for some time, and it was certainly one of the nicest built and sounding amp for the money that I can think of. I’d definitely consider getting one of them again in the future (probably a Ghia).

Klon Has Landed

Friday, February 12th, 2010

The Klon pedal arrived today! Yay! So stoked to try this thing out – I hope it was worth all the hype!

In other news, I picked up a Skreddy Screwdriver pedal last night as well. Haven’t played with it for more than an hour, but its certainly going to be a staple on my board. What an amazing pedal. Very Fat sounding. I’ll post some photos, and a review as soon as I get a chance!

So I Bought a Klon Centaur

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

You probably have no idea what a Klon Centaur is. But its highly likely that if you’ve ever been to a concert, you’ve heard one of them. Its basically one of the most sought after guitar pedals – and i’ve finally got one. Well, not yet, its being shipped out this weekend.

This is what it looks like, its a pretty large pedal, and has a very distinct design – and from what i’ve read/heard from sound samples – its got a very distinct sound.

Review – Mule

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

img_0305Well, I got a chance to try out the Mule last night.

First off, the first thing I usually do with pedals, is compare them to ones I already have, just so i have an idea of what sounds it most mimmics… I could look up the specs, and the circuit design, and probably figure it out, but its better to do it with the ears.

First thing I noticed, at low gain levels, it sounds VERY much like my Gaspedals CARB that I got last month when I was in Texas for SXSW – BUT – it sounds like the CARB, when the CARB is turned up to half gain, I had the Mule at about 8o clock (barely on).

This surprised me – as I didn’t expect it, i’m used to fuzzes being too harsh sounding (which is why i’ve stayed away from them).

So then, I started comparing it to my Cusack Screamer Fuzz (the only fuzz pedal on my board). I was shocked at how good it sounded. It actually made me HATE the screamer fuzz to the point where I removed it, and replaced it with the mule.

Well, anyway.. after playing around with it for a bit, I noticed the Mule sounds really good stacked with my HotCake and even the Carb… they both add a bit more mid drive, which is nice at times… The Mule also doesn’t freak out when i’ve got the Tone Press on (something i’ve noticed about Fuzz pedals, is that they don’t usually play nice with compression pedals).

Either way, in all, i’m very happy with the Mule, I can see it staying on my board for a while.
